Thank Gov. Locke for Increasing Funds to Protect Orcas!
$100,000 in discretionary funds will help the devastated Southern Resident orca whales

Background
CONGRATULATIONS! Your letters worked! Washington's Governor Locke has just announced he was appropriating $100,000 from his discretionary funds to help the devastated Southern Resident orca whales.

The funds will be used for "[a]uthorizing $90,000 from the emergency fund that, coupled with $10,000 from the Puget Sound Action team's budget, will increase Washington's role in the international effort underway to protect Puget Sound's orca population."

Though this is not a substitute for what can only be provided under the federal Endangered Species Act, it will enable the state to be an active participant in any forthcoming recovery effort. Thank Governor Locke and the Department of Fish and Wildlife Director today!
